Cliff and Outcrop Safety identification and geology
Outcrops can have loose blocks, unstable ledges, and slippery surfaces. Falls can happen fast, especially when people focus on the geology and not their footing. Risk increases near cliff edges, steep talus, wet moss, snow, or when carrying heavy packs. Use a fall hazard plan and choose safe routes. Keep a safe distance from edges, and avoid climbing unless trained and equipped. This guidance is educational and is not a substitute for your employer's or site's safety training and rules. Do list: Do a quick slope and rock stability check before stepping out, Keep at least one safe escape route in mind, Use spotters near edges and steep ground, Stop work in high winds, rain, ice, or poor visibility, Document and avoid known unstable zones. Dont list: Do not work at cliff edges alone, Do not climb loose rock without training and equipment, Do not stand under active rockfall paths, Do not jump gaps or step on undercut ledges, Do not rush sampling when footing is unsafe. First aid: If a fall occurs, call emergency services. Do not move the person if spinal injury is suspected unless there is immediate danger. Control bleeding and keep the person warm. Follow the rescue plan if working at heights.. Regulations: Follow working-at-heights requirements and fall protection plans. In Canada, follow provincial OHS working-at-heights rules and site-specific fall protection and rescue procedures.. Hazard level: high. Ppe required: sturdy boots with good tread, hard hat in loose rock areas, work gloves, fall protection gear when required by the plan. Common geological settings: Road cuts, shoreline cliffs, open pit highwalls outside controlled areas , steep trenches, and rugged mapping terrain.
