Lead Mineral Handling identification and geology
Lead can enter the body through inhalation of dust or ingestion from contaminated hands. Handling lead-bearing minerals becomes higher risk when samples are dusty or when cutting and crushing creates fine particles. Carry-home dust is also a concern, especially if work clothes go home. Control dust and practise strict hygiene. Keep work and clean zones separate, and wash hands before eating or drinking. Bag and label lead-bearing specimens. Do list: Wash hands before eating, drinking, or smoking, Keep lead-contaminated clothing at the work site, Use wet methods and HEPA cleanup when dust is present, Store lead-bearing samples in sealed containers, Post clear signage for contaminated work areas. Dont list: Do not eat or drink in contaminated areas, Do not dry sweep lead dust, Do not take dusty boots and coveralls into living quarters, Do not use compressed air for cleanup, Do not store lead samples with food or personal items. First aid: If dust is inhaled, move to fresh air. If on skin, wash with soap and water. If in eyes, flush with clean water for at least 15 minutes. If ingestion is suspected, contact poison control and seek medical advice.. Regulations: Follow WHMIS/SDS and site hygiene rules. Refer to NIOSH/OSHA guidance where applicable and MSHA rules in mine settings. Use a respirator program consistent with CSA Z94.4 when respirators are required.. Hazard level: high. Ppe required: nitrile gloves, safety goggles, fit-tested N95/P100 respirator when dust possible, work coveralls. Common geological settings: Galena-bearing core, sulphide concentrates, assay prep areas, core sheds with cutting/grinding, and historic mine sites.
